The Cross Country Course

Course distances:

The Cross Country course consits of two loops, a 1km distance loop (short loop) and a 2km distance loop (long loop). Measurement of the course was done with a measuring wheel along the shortest possible route a runner may take. The various race category distances are made up by combining the short and long loops. For race category distances that make use of both the short loop and the long loop, the short loop must be completed first, followed by the long loop:

  • 1km: 1 x short loop
  • 2km: 1 x long loop
  • 3km: 1 x short loop + 1 x long loop
  • 4km: 2 x long loop
  • 6km: 3 x long loop
  • 8km: 4 x long loop
  • 10km: 5 x long loop

Course markings:

The Cross Country course will be clearly marked by making use of fencing, barrier marking tape, chalk lines, sign posts, and flags. The track will be 5m wide on average with the narrowest section of the track no less than 2m wide.

Course description:

The course at Koedoeslaagte may be considered most true to the pure historic and original characteristics of Cross Country running that South Africa has to offer.

With the support and experience of our host at Koedoeslaagte we literally went the extra mile in studying the course design requirements to present a Cross Country league that is in line with what athletes can expect from an authentic Cross Country course.

At its lowest altitude the course is routed through a grove on the bank of the Vaal River with tricky slopes and turns. Higher up, away from the river bank, the undulating landscape with its twisting trails demand mental and physical endurance, good orientation skills, and an innate ability to negotiate varied terrain. There may be natural obstacles on the course and some of the sections make it worth mentioning that running with spiked shoes are not recommended.

This is an Altitude Course (1330-1360m) that adheres to the desires of athlete safety, regulatory requirements, and the demand for authentic Cross Country running.
